Advantages when Self Efficacy is High:

  • Quickly recovers after failures or setbacks
  • Completes work with quality and timeliness

Risks when Self Efficacy is Overused:

  • Sets highly stretched goals that prevents having a balanced life
  • Tries very hard to justify own responses
  • Appears arrogant and over-confident
  • Not in touch with own feelings and that of others in their quest to succeed
  • Consistently focussed on outcomes and may miss the process

Risks when Self Efficacy is Low:

  • Lacks clear goals and a way forward
  • Easily distracted because of a lack of focus
  • Overlooks mistakes just to complete tasks
  • Lacks initiative and needs prompting to proceed
  • Lower self-confidence and limiting self-beliefs

Development Advice:

  • Identify your strengths and build on them. At the same time, identify any weaknesses and do what it takes to turn them into strengths.
  • Do an analysis of tasks and goals by considering the strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats of every decision.
  • Learn to persist in times of failure so as to nurture your acceptance of mistakes.
  • Use every failure as an opportunity to learn and grow. Ask yourself “What would you do differently if this occurred again?”
  • Cultivate self-belief by having confidence in your ideas by sharing them with others, so as to affirm your thoughts.
