Definition of Trust, together with High, Overused & Low behaviours and some Advice on how to Develop this competency (42:03 mins)

Trusts others, and is trustworthy to others.

Advantages when Trust is High:

  • Keeps promises and obligations to others as much as possible
  • Admits own mistakes readily without reservation
  • Gives time for others to express their opinions patiently
  • Listens to others without prior judgement
  • Understands other’s mistakes with openness

Risks when Trust is Overused:

  • Does not question other’s intention and accepts everything from others as the truth
  • Believes that all agreements will be kept without checking back on progress
  • Allows for repeated mistakes
  • Overly commits to an agreement to not let others down and overly sacrifices for others
  • Tends to be complacent and takes things for granted

Risks when Trust is Low:

  • Persistently suspects there are hidden agendas
  • Makes snap judgements even when there is a prior agreement
  • Changes mind easily and makes excuses for unreliability
  • Prefers to work alone because of beliefs that others are unreliable
  • Uncomfortable about admitting mistakes and making compromises

Development Advice:

  • Build alliances and nurture relationships by confiding in others.
  • Strive to be more consistent in your actions and words.
  • Take a risk by giving someone a chance to do something important and give them the best tools to succeed.
  • Let go of the need for control when possible and believe that all will go well.
  • Imagine all the possible scenarios. Ask yourself “What is the worst that can happen?”, “What can I do when this happens?”
